Meet Opera Neon, the new AI agentic browser

Here at Opera we’ve been working on agentic AI for the past two years, figuring out how to use AI to go beyond a simple conversation. We unveiled the initial results of our work in March 2025 with the introduction of Browser Operator – an AI agent that can browse and do things on the web for you, such as making purchases or booking a trip.
Today, we are making a big leap forward with the introduction of Opera Neon, our first fully agentic browser. Opera Neon is the first step towards fundamentally reimagining what a browser can be in the age of intelligent agents. Much more than a place to view web pages, Neon can browse with you or for you, take action, and help you get things done – whether that’s researching a topic, automating a workflow, or building something entirely new.
Unlike traditional AI browsers that simply integrate AI tools, Opera Neon is our first browser that becomes your partner in the age of intelligent AI agents. Opera Neon allows you to go far beyond the basics of chatting with AI agents by enabling you to do and make things in collaboration with them. It’s a browser that can operate itself based on your intent, and browse with you and for you on your computer. By operating a cloud computer, it can also make things for you, such as reports or interactive web applications. It can even host them for you to be able to easily share them with others.
Opera Neon is a premium subscription product and we are opening the waitlist today for early adopters.
We’re at the brink of a new agentic web
At this point you might be wondering why we are making a browser with agentic AI at its core. The answer is simple. We’re at the brink of a new web: the agentic web, which we’re calling Web 4o, an evolving ecosystem where we believe the web browser will play a critical role.
AI agents can perform tasks for you in the browser like planning and booking your holidays. They can understand what you want and do your shopping for you, or even research and find information that is compiled specifically for you. Or, what about an AI agent that can help you make things that you can instantly share with others? You could simply state your wish and deploy AI to make a website, a prototype of a game, or even an animated model that explains the law of momentum ready to share with your class.
We understand that we’re at a shifting point in which AI agents are becoming increasingly capable and helpful, and that the browser is the app where you can get access to these agents – as your most important and used app. That’s why Opera Neon is the perfect platform for you to get the most out of these new technologies. In fact, it’s a browser designed to rethink what the role of the browser in this new web should be, and how it can help you offload most of your tasks to AI agents.
Browsing with Opera Neon
By combining agentic AI with the popular Opera browser, Opera Neon brings some new use cases that are powerful and unique:
- Chat with Opera Neon: it is the browser’s native, fully integrated AI. The AI agent you are chatting with can search the web, provide contextual information about the webpage you’re on, and deliver most other things you expect from an AI chat in a browser.
- Do with Opera Neon: with a technology previously showcased as “Browser Operator”, Neon can use the textual representation of websites to understand their content, and interact with them for you – making the web browser the perfect place for an AI agent like this. Neon can do web tasks like filling forms, booking trips, or even shopping – and all of it happens locally in your browser. Opera’s agentic browser is doing all of this, while preserving your security and privacy.
- Make with Opera Neon: something never seen in any browser before – a complete AI engine capable of understanding and interpreting what you want to make, and getting it done for you, even if you go offline – it will continue operating on a cloud computer and be ready when you come back. Neon can help you when you have big, hard tasks to solve, and want to build new things to use later – either by yourself or with others. And you can even ask it to make more things at the same time – enabling true agentic multitasking right in your browser.
Under the hood of Neon
How does it work under the hood? Chatting with the browser is probably something you’ll be the most familiar with as this is how many of us today use AI. For years we’ve been developing our own AI engine, which uses the world’s best AI models, and now we’re deploying it in Opera Neon so that you get the most capable, fully integrated browser AI.
Opera Neon is capable of understanding the context of a webpage and giving you the most relevant information about it. It can help you write anything you want, always in your preferred style. And if you want to, you can also use it to generate images and different types of files. It covers all the basics of a browser’s native AI and it is there to conveniently support you when using Neon’s other capabilities and tackling more complex tasks.
Our approach to letting Neon do things for you prioritizes user empowerment and privacy. Unlike other AI agents that depend on screen recordings or cloud-based virtual machines with your credentials, Opera Neon browses with you or for you locally – right inside your PC.
Opera Neon understands webpages through the DOM tree and layout data, not by analyzing pixels or using a virtual pointer. This makes it faster and more efficient, with the ability to interpret the entire page at once without needing to scroll through it – meaning that it can understand and navigate through a page faster. Because it operates natively on your browser, your data – like browsing history, logins, and cookies – stays private and local. This also means that you can easily take control back at any time.
Finally, Opera Neon can make things for you. It will act like a conductor of AI agents able to understand your needs and then break them down into different smaller tasks. Once the tasks have been defined, it employs AI agents contained in a virtual machine on our European-hosted servers to make your idea into a tangible (digital) result. Think of it as an orchestra conductor that understands the whole piece of music – your needs and wishes – and points to the different members of the orchestra to execute their parts – task division and execution. Together, everything forms a finished and polished piece.
This “piece” that Neon can “make” could be, for example, a small videogame, or a website comparing stocks, or even a thorough research report about any topic – expanding the limits of your creativity and productivity.
While working on your tasks, Opera Neon can overcome a lot of hurdles and learn as it goes along. Maybe you want to upload a data sheet combined with a research paper and make that into an interactive game? Well, Neon may not have all the tools to do so when it embarks on this task, but it will happily install python libraries and Javascript frameworks to get there. When Neon encounters errors, it will attempt to self-correct.
With Neon, gone are the days when the lack of technical know-how was a complete blocker to the things you could create on the web. This new agentic technology is here to help you create, to take your ideas and turn them into something digitally tangible and shareable – all from within the Opera Neon browser.
Together, Neon’s ability to chat, do, and make, create a hub that makes your browser ready to make the best out of the new agentic web.
The comeback of Opera Neon
If you’ve been with us for a long time, you might remember the name Opera Neon as it was a concept browser that we launched back in 2016 – yes, that was almost 10 years ago; time flies.
There are countless elements that we ended up adopting from that concept browser and that we used to shape the future of the web, for example: the sidebar with messengers, the multimedia players, different tab behaviors, and even the split screen mode.
Today, Opera Neon is making a comeback but not as a concept browser. Instead, it will help us shape the future of browsing once again through the use of agentic AI. We want to use the same name as before, as it has become a symbol of innovation and change – words that describe what’s currently happening on the web.
